High Ability Learners A definition...High Ability students in Portage Township Schools are students of all cultural and economic backgrounds who demonstrate or show the potential for exemplary achievement beyond students of their same age or experience. Portage Township Schools identifies High Ability Students through a multi-faceted assessment protocol. Student are identified based on their performance on Inview Assessment (CSI), Star Reading, Star Math, ISTEP+ scores, SAGES 2 (where applicable), and teacher and parent input. Identification typically takes place in the Spring with services beginning the following year. All Portage students are provided differentiated instruction. Additional services for high ability students are provided in a variety of ways. All elementary buildings offer cluster-grouping instruction for their high ability students. This model places a group of 4-9 students at a particular grade level in the same class so the students can be provided a coordinated level of instruction. Pre-AP/Honors courses are offered to students identified through the selection process in grades 6, 7, and 8 at both Portage middle schools (Fegely and Willowcreek). At Portage High School, high ability students are enrolled in AP/Honors classes. |
