Title I is a federally funded program that provides financial assistance to schools and districts in low-income areas. The funds are used to provide educational services to students who are at risk of failing to meet standards. Title I has existed since the 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), which was reauthorized into the "No Child Left Behind Act of 2001".
Federal funds are first allocated to the state educational agency, which determines funding amounts awarded to each district. The district then determines which qualifying schools can be served, as determined by the poverty rate, and distributes funds based on a formula.
Portage Township Schools Title I funds are primarily used to provide personnel to work with our most at-risk students. In our elementary buildings, the Extended Day Kindergarten program is solely funded by Title I. In addition, Title I Teachers and Assistants are paid for with Title I dollars. With additional funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the Portage Title I program expanded to include Fegely and Willowcreek middle Schools. Aside from staff, Title I funds also provide materials to support student learning as well as professional development. |
