| The Portage Board of School Trustees regular business meetings are normally scheduled for the last Monday of each month. Board Discussion meetings are held the generally the third Wednesday of the month. Special meetings are scheduled to deal with additional business which may arise during the month. Indiana law requires that all school board meetings be open to the public for the purpose of permitting members of the public to observe and record them. ( Indiana Code 5-14-1.5-3) Advanced notice of all meetings is provided to local news media, and agendas are posted outside the Administration Building located at 6240 US Highway 6. The Portage Board of School Trustees provides governance for an approximately $78 million business that employs more than 1000 people to serve the needs of more than 8,500 students. The board provides local governance for childrens educational experiences from kindergarten through graduation by means of specific procedures that are defined in corporation policies. Board Begins Paperless Board Meetings The PTS Board of School Trustees have incorporated a new paperless solution to Board Meetings. Beginning July 2008, all Board agendas and meetings may be found on "Board Docs". The link is provided in the column to the right. "Board Docs" is open and available to the public. For the public side, no username or password is needed. All previous years' agendas and minutes will continue to be available in the left column, but new documents will only be available through the "Board Docs" link beginning July 2008. Board Homework Students will be pleased to hear that their board members have homework all year round! The board agenda is prepared one week prior to the meeting. Board members receive a electronic packet of materials in advance that contains the agenda and detailed information. This information provides background on each agenda item, copies of any policies to be discussed or agreements to be considered, and application materials for any personnel recommendations made by the administration. Board members receive an average of 70 pages in order to study and prepare for an average meeting. District Policy Manual The Board Policy Handbook is available online to interested people. District Administration The Superintendent of Schools is the executive officer for the school board. He attends all meetings and participates in all deliberations of the board except when deliberations involve his employment. The superintendent is responsible for the development, supervision, and operation of school programs and facilities and for the development of the corporations administrative guidelines. The superintendents professional staff includes an associate superintendent for student learning and achievement, an assistant superintendent for adult and student policy, a coordinator of title & special student programs, a director of financial services, a director of food services, a director of information & technology, a director of health services, and a director of transportation. Each has direct responsibilities and regularly updates the board concerning his/her specific area. |
