FUN FACTS
Did you know?
The National School Lunch Program Act was signed
into law in 1946.
This was due to:
1. Many young men applying for the military service were found to be malnourished.
2. An outlet was needed for agricultural commodities after World War II.
3. Studies showed that students performed better in the classroom with proper nourishment.
According to archived records Portage Township Schools began it's lunch program prior to 1949.
In 1949 Portage Food
Service looked like this:
# of Schools: 2
Enrollment 600
Lunches Served Daily 360
Price for Lunch $.20
