MISSION

The Portage Township Schools Transportation Department is dedicated to providing students and staff the safest and most efficient means of transportation possible.

During the 2010-2011 school year, we transported over 7000 students to and from school daily. Not only did we transport to the eight elementary schools, two middle schools and high school here in Portage, we also transported to several schools in Chesterton, Wheeler, Hobart and Valparaiso everyday as well as to the Indiana School for the Deaf and Blind in Indianapolis once a week. This adds up to over 7000 miles traveled everyday. That equates to over 2.6 million pick-ups and drop-offs as well as over 1.2 million miles traveled by our drivers last school year. Those numbers do not include the hundreds of fieldtrips and athletic trips taken around the region and state. In order to accomplish this we have a fleet of 104 buses, maintained by four mechanics and managed by an office staff of four people.

In addition to the transportation of our students, the Transportation Department also manages and maintains the fuel site for all municipal vehicles in Portage Township including Police, Fire, City and Street departments. We dispense nearly 400,000 gallons of fuel annually.
