Walking Boundaries
Portage Township Schools will provide bus transportation for all students who live in the district and outside the set walking boundaries.
Students are expected to walk a reasonable distance to their school. The longest walking distance will be no more than 1 mile for students in grades K–8, and no more than 1.5 miles for students in grades 9–12. The walking route should be the shortest, safest, and most reasonable path to the school.
Some students who ride the bus may need to walk a short distance to a bus stop, called a collection point. These collection points are chosen by the Superintendent or someone they assign. Just like walking to school, the distance to a bus stop will not be more than 1 mile for grades K–8 and 1.5 miles for grades 9–12.
For Kindergarten students:
-
Morning students will either walk or be bused to school and then walk or be bused home after class.
-
Afternoon students will either walk or be bused to school and then walk or be bused home after class.
Each Kindergarten student will have one bus drop-off location for the whole school year.
Kindergarten students must be met at the bus stop by a parent or guardian. If no one is there, the child will be taken back to school. Parents may allow an older sibling to meet the student by giving the bus driver written permission.
