Our Portage students today are preparing to enter a world in which colleges and businesses are demanding more than ever before. To ensure all students are ready for success after high school, the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) developed the Indiana College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS). These standards establish clear and consistent guidelines for what every student will learn, should know, and should be able to do in Reading, Writing, and Math from Kindergarten to 12th grade.

The CCRS focus on developing each student’s:

· critical-thinking and problem-solving ability
· independence to tackle tough content with strategies and increased confidence
· knowledge base across a wide range of subject matter
· response to different tasks, different purposes, and different ‘audiences’
· ability to understand what they learning and also critique what they are learning
· appreciation for evidence to support an idea, opinion, or cause
· technology and digital media skills and abilities
· appreciation for different perspectives and other cultures

By focusing on developing these skills and abilities, students acquire more of what they need to be successful in school, college, and working career.

Additionally, the CCRS standards continue to provide a way for Portage teachers to measure student progress throughout the school year and ensure that our Portage kids are on the pathway to success in their academic careers.

The links on the left side of this page will lead you to parent guides that explain what students will be learning in each grade, trimester, quarter, and year throughout grades K-12. Additionally, you will find a link that provides you with a “glossary” of school terms, words, and acronyms. This “glossary” is designed to help you better understand the ‘lingo’ used in your child’s school.

These parent guides and “glossary” of school terms will remain on this page and updated as adjustments are made to what students are learning or when new school ‘lingo’ becomes part of our conversations. We hope you find these resources helpful and easy to understand. This is, and will always be, our primary goal. In order for parents to be as involved and informed as possible, we strive to communicate in clear and concise ways. If there is additional information you would like for us to consider adding to this page, please feel free to share those ideas and thoughts through email to our Webmaster. We will do our best to provide you and the greater Portage community with additional resources that come from your feedback and suggestions.
